SurroundSound is a Canadian radio documentary festival celebrating interesting and compelling audio stories by both emerging and veteran journalists, producers and writers. The festival first aired in the summer of 2015 on community radio in Ottawa and Edmonton. The 2018 edition will take place in July.

Why audio storytelling

An article published in The Atlantic on the emotional appeal of audio stories included the following quote by Emma Rodero, a communications professor at the Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona.

Audio is one of the most intimate forms of media because you are constantly building your own images of the story in your mind and you’re creating your own production.

It is with this in mind that we bring you a selection of audio documentaries that we hope will inspire you – both intellectually and emotionally. Images can be powerful, but audio stories have an undeniable ability to convey emotions, using only voices and sounds, and to connect with listeners through their own imagination.

How to listen to the festival

Our hope with this festival is to share interesting and compelling audio pieces with a wide audience. The 2018 festival will take this July.
